Snap-off Blade Knives for Wallpapering
The next cutting tool that you can't do without is a utility knife with snap-off blades. A snap-off knife, cutter knife or also called trimming knife for wallpaper should be among the tools for wallpapering, because it will be of great help when trimming the edges of wallpaper at baseboards, doors, etc.
Snap-off blade knife has a retractable ca 100mm long, segmented blade usually of 8 segments that can be snapped off section by section to renew the sharp edge.
Snap-off blade knives are used to cut wallpaper to the desired length, as well as to cut from the bottom after gluing and trim in the desired places. The snap-off blade also dulls very quickly on wet paper, so the user needs to frequently renew the cutting blade by snapping off the dulled cutting segment. This is very convenient and economical in this case, as 1 blade has a minimum of 8 segments.
However, even though snap-off blades are economical to use, it is still not recommended to use just any blade. There are thousands of blades on the market of different manufacturers, materials, sharpening and that is why it is so challenging to find the best blade.
How to Choose the Right Utility Snap-off Knife
Choosing the right cutting tool among thousands of options can sometimes seem like a daunting task, so we decided to tell you how to choose the right utility snap-off knife.
First of all, choose a snap-off knife with a metal blade rail and metal handle. This will make the blade last longer and give you a better grip on the knife. This will give you better cutting quality.
Pondering whether to choose a 9mm or 18mm knife? First think about the type of material you will be cutting. Often a small utility knife is very good for simple cutting jobs, such as wallpapering and construction. A slightly larger 18mm utility knife works better for tougher, thicker materials such as flooring, cutting rubber or polyurethane materials.
Choose knives with a comfortable handle, preferably rubberized or rough, which will stop your hands slipping on the knife and allow you to work safely with gloves on.
Also, buy knives that have a blade segment snapper or purchase a safety blade box for this purpose. Never break off blade segments with your fingers, at most with pliers.
How to Choose the Right Utility Snap-off Blade
So how do you choose the right blades for your knife? It's really not that difficult. Here are some guidelines:
- determine the width of your knife: 9, 18, 22, 25mm? 18mm is the most common, with 18mm blades installed. Their standard size is 100*18mm and the thickness is recommended to be at least 0.45-0.50mm.
- If you have a choice, always buy blades for professional use and from established companies.
- Analyze what material will be cut. If you are cutting wet wallpaper or similar hard-to-cut materials, choose a very sharp blade with at least double sharpening.
- if you need to cut with a long blade, i.e. you plan to extend the blade forward to its maximum length - choose blades without segments, like 180LUS, 90US. This is for safety reasons and to avoid the segment breaking off and damaging the user.
- if you plan to cut wet materials or in a wet environment - prefer blades with corrosion protection coating or high chrome content.
- if you plan to cut details and a super neat cut is a priority - buy blades with a sharper tip, i.e. instead of the standard 60° tip angle you can choose a 30° tip angle.
- You can also opt for pro blades that will keep sharp and perform longer than any other equivalent. And these blades are the PRO Sollex 90P segmented snap-off blades for 9mm wide snap-off knives and 180P for 18mm wide cutter knives. Like the 2PlusS blades, the 180P and 90P are designed for professional use and are useful for both wallpapering and certain painting tasks where precision, sharpness and cutting performance are required.
